500+ Runners: 1 Huge Success

MUSKEGON, MICH. — More than 500 people from across the state visited the sandy shoreline of Muskegon’s Pere Marquette Beach on May 21, 2016, to take on 20+ obstacles in the second annual ForeShore Adventure Run. Ticket sales directly benefit the Muskegon Rescue Mission and its homeless shelters and food pantries.

With more than 20 obstacles on the 5k course, the event theme, “Overcoming Life’s Obstacles,” takes on a whole new meaning for runners. But the message of helping people in need is not lost on those who participated.

“This event is all about running to overcome life’s obstacles,” said Kevin Newton, Executive Director of Muskegon Rescue Mission. “Every dollar this event generates will be used to help families in need right here in our community.”

Last year’s event exceeded everyone’s expectations. This year’s course is bigger, better, and more challenging.

More than 500 runners are expected to participate. The first runners hit the course at 8:30 am Saturday, May 21. The last runners will be finishing at 11 am. There are competitive and noncompetitive heats throughout the morning.

“Thanks for a great race for a great cause, we will definitely be back next year!” participant Tracy Niemeier Stickle said after last year’s event.

Presenting Sponsor Huntington Bank, the City of Muskegon, Mercy Health, Pepsi, Rock Star Energy Drinks, Alcoa, Country Dairy Kids Zone, and RCP Marketing, are helping organizers make the event possible.

“At Huntington, we are always looking for opportunities to support community events that encourage health and fitness and work to benefit local non-profit agencies,” said Michael Lindley, Senior Vice President of Regional Marketing.

Adventure Runs are one of the fastest growing sports in the world—it combines endurance with the challenge of going over, under, around and through a series of difficult obstacles. ForeShore Adventure Run participants will have to “Get over it”, under “Hairspray” and avoid “Ankle Biter”.  These are just a few of the over 15 obstacles runners will have to endure.  “It will be just another relaxing day at the beach,” Newton joked.

Muskegon Rescue Mission has provided food, shelter, clothing and spiritual direction for those in need since 1907. In 2014 alone 20,000 nights of lodging were provided for homeless men, women and children; 99,000+ meals were provided or served.

“The foreshore adventure run is fun for all ages…you don’t have to be a seasoned athlete to get in a good workout. The obstacles were tough, fun and full of laughter.  I can’t wait for this year’s Adventure!”

Kasey Ann Spofford

“Running in the sand, climbing the hills and crawling under things was a lot easier when I was a kid. But crossing the finish line at 45 made me feel tuff, strong and very happy I did it!”

“At first I thought wow, ‘Can I make it through all those obstacles?’ As I progressed through the course I was reminded how I felt as a child….free to laugh, fall and just look silly… Great race to just do and not worry about time!!”

“The ForeShore 5K was crazy fun and a great way to spend quality time with my dad…while kicking his butt. The race was a fantastic way for people of all skill levels to get out there and have fun while working hard. The fact that running this race helped a deserving cause made it an even more rewarding experience to me.”
